Want to spend 2 months learning more about insects and arachnids while hanging out in Costa Rica for free?
The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about insects and arachnids for 20 years! Volunteers from all over the world are trained to guide people through 4 butterfly habitats, a leaf cutter ant colony and a collection of live insects and arachnids from Costa Rica. The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens works hard every day to develop understanding and tolerance towards the many different arthropods we have living on the planet.
You will be trained on-site to deliver 1-hour English tours through our gardens. Once you are trained, you will guide 1-4 tours per day. Other duties include watching front desk, general care and maintenance of the facilities, work in our gardens collecting eggs and caterpillars, helping care for the chickens and tilapia, and also tending to the vegetable gardens. You will work 6 out of 7 days from 8:00am to 4pm.
Are outgoing and flexible, and have a positive attitude! A passion for nature and teaching is a must. Spanish is not necessary, though it is always helpful; any other languages are also appreciated. We teach science, and you must be comfortable talking to people about evolution. The gardens are located in the mountains so a certain level of physical ability is needed, not just for the job but for getting around town!
What You Get:
You will receive modest room and board at The Gardens for the duration of your stay. You will also get a chance to learn some Spanish, two months of environmental education experience, knowledge of neotropical insects and arachnids, and the opportunity to experience one of the most spectacular ecosystems and nicest cultures in the world! Your one day off per week can be spent exploring the nearby forests, but be aware that we are in the mountains, and you can’t make it to the beach on your day off!
Our teaching approach is laid back and fun just like our staff, and we want to make sure that you have a good time while here in Costa Rica!
Please send Bryna and David (owners) an email an about yourself and why you would like to volunteer with us, and anything else you think would be relevant. We have openings all year round; please let us know when you are hoping to join us! Feel free to send any questions you might have regarding our program, or your application letter to firstname.lastname@example.org.
